林は、近代日本の思想家の中から、とりわけ、民衆の側に立った代表的な思想家として、中江兆民、幸徳秋水、吉野作造の3人について、その生涯と思想を紹介している。

3人とも、その思想は、彼らが生きた時代には、必ずしも、社会においては、実現することは、なかった。

戦後の民主主義は、占領軍が日本に押し付けたものだという議論があるが、彼らの生涯をたどると、必ずしも、そうとは言い切れないことがわかる。

戦前の日本にも、社会に底辺には、確実に民主主義の思想が、根付いていたことが、この本を読むと、よくわかる。

They tried to realize the democracy in Japan society but unfortunately failed in their age.

Some peoples are saying USA gave the democracy Japan after World wide war 2 and Japan did not know what the democracy was before.

But their lives proves this is not true actually.
