著者の斉藤は、能楽愛好者の会の幹事長を務めている。学者ではなく、会社務めを終えて、この書をものにしている。

内容は、風姿花伝を中心にした世阿弥の能の対する考え方、能の歴史、世阿弥と足利将軍たちとの関係、世阿弥の能の特徴など、多岐にわたる。

新書といえど、侮る事なかれ。レベルは高い。特に、世阿弥の能の特徴を記した部分は、斉藤の能の鑑賞経験の豊富さが伺える。能を味わい尽くした者だけが語れる領域に達している。

巻末の、参考文献一覧を見ると、その種類が、能だけではなく、歴史、思想など多岐にわたり、斉藤のこの書にかけた情熱の深さが伝わってくる。

アマチュアリズムの神髄を感じた。名著といっていい。
