石田瑞麿 日本人と地獄 Jigoku and Japanese by Mizumaro Ishida

インドで考え出された地獄というものが、日本に取り込まれ、どのように変容したかを、思想、絵画、文学などを中心に考察する。

地獄がリアルなものとして考えられたのは、平安時代から室町時代までだった。貴族の時代から、武士の時代へ変わる時に、貴族の人々が、現実の中に、地獄を見たのだろう。

また、江戸時代にたびたび起こった飢饉は、文字通り、この世に現れた地獄だった。

紫式部が、小説という大きな嘘を書いたゆえに、地獄に行った、と考えられた、というエピソードが、興味深かった。

Ishida described how the concept of hell, Jigoku which was created in India has changed in Japanese society by referring thought, paintings and story.

Jigoku was popular term from Heian to Muromachi period in Japan. The big transition from Chinese style goverment to Samurai style has happened at that age. Old generation governed saw the transition as Jigoku.

It was said Murasaki Shikibu gone to Jigoku because she wrote the tail of Genji. Writing drama was a kinds of crime at that age. I was impressive with the episode.
