冒頭で、柳田は、山の中で暮らしていた父親が、生活苦から、自分の子供を殺してしまう、というショッキングなエピソードを紹介する。
読者の心を、冒頭でしっかりと掴んでしまう、小説家のような柳田の文章の上手さには、改めて舌を巻いてしまう。
山の人生という書名だが、時に、山には直接関係ない、神隠しのような話題も紹介している。
雑誌への連載をもとにしているので、1つの章は短く読みやすい。しかし、全体の構成は、実に良く考えられており、柳田の長年の研究の成果が、あますところなく、現れている。
