柳田国男 伝説（岩波新書） Legend by Kunio Yanagida

柳田国男が、昭和13年に行った講演をもとに、書き上げた書。伝説というテーマを扱いながら、歴史学とは違った方法論を持つ、民俗学という学問について、多くの実例と合わせて解説している。

柳田によれば、歴史学は、文書になっていること、それが誰によって書かれているか、ということを重視するが、民俗学では、その両者は明らかでないことが多く、むしろ、その伝説が語り続けられている、ということを重視し、その背景を探ることに重きを置いている。

天皇あるいは貴人が地方に移り住んだという伝説、八丈島に源為朝が流されたという伝説などは、単なる言い伝えでは片付けられない、ある種の真実を含んでいるという柳田の主張は、文字通り、民俗学の核心を語っている。

Yanagida has written this book on 1940 base on his class on 1938. He explains about his folklore by using the legends as a theme.

History orients the document and who wrote the document. But folklore orients why the legend has been told for long time and what is on the background of the legends.

Yanagida believed some legends which nobles come to a local village and lived long time ago told us a kind of truth. This is a core of the concept of his folklore.
