服部幸雄 大いなる小屋（講談社学術文庫） Great Box - Theater by Yukio Hattori

大いなる小屋とは、江戸時代の歌舞伎の芝居小屋のこと。歌舞伎の世界では、舞台と観客席の一体となった空間を、芝居小屋と呼んだ。

服部は、芝居小屋に関わる様々な要素と、その背景やエピソードを紹介しながら、江戸時代の歌舞伎の祝祭空間を、この本で解説している。

鼠木戸を潜り、小屋に入ることは、異界に入ることを意味する。様々な出し物で登場する橋は、異なる世界の境界を意味している。幕は、結界を表している。など、歌舞伎にまつわる物の背後には、古代から続く、宗教や習慣が残っていることを証明している。

そして、最後に、四国の金比羅大芝居の成功を例にあげながら、現代において、江戸時代のような芝居小屋を復活させることを提言している。

Great Box means Kabuki's theater in Edo age. Peoples at that age called is as the playing box which in integrated the stage and sheets tightly.

Hattori explains some elements of the theater by introducing the background, history and episodes. As him, the entrance, the curtain and the bridge in the stage are religious symbols.

He hopes the similar theater as Edo age should be come back now.
